Why Valley Humidity Clogs AC Drain Lines in Knoxville

Every summer, one of the most common calls we take across Knox County starts the same way: "There's water pooling around my furnace," or "There's a wet spot spreading on the ceiling." Nine times out of ten, the culprit is a clogged condensate drain line — and Knoxville's climate is practically designed to cause them.

The Valley Recipe for a Clog

Your air conditioner is a dehumidifier as much as a cooler. On a muggy July day, a Knoxville system can pull gallons of water out of the air. That moisture drips off the evaporator coil into a drain pan and flows out through a PVC line. But our warm, humid river-valley air feeds algae and mold growth inside that line, and the slime builds until the water has nowhere to go.

When the line clogs, the pan overflows — into the closet, onto the ceiling below an attic air handler, or onto the safety switch that shuts the whole system down on the hottest day of the year.

Catching It Early

• Musty smell when the AC kicks on — early algae growth
• Water around the air handler or bubbling paint on a ceiling below it
• System shuts off randomly — often the float safety switch doing its job
• Slow drip or no drip from the outdoor drain outlet while the AC runs

A cup of distilled vinegar poured through the line's cleanout every month or two slows algae growth, and a wet/dry vacuum on the outside outlet can pull a soft clog free. But a line that's fully blocked — or one that keeps clogging — needs a proper flush and treatment. We'll clear it, treat it, and check the pan and safety switches while we're there.
